Poverty Point World Heritage Site, Epps-Atlatl Demonstration, Wednesday-Sunday Upon Request Thousands of years ago, the Native Americans who built Poverty Point needed to be able to hunt for their food. The atlatl was the best tool for the job. A ranger will discuss the significance of the atlatl and the techniques for using one. 3/16/2019 • Mansfield State Historic Site, Mansfield-A Soldier´s Vice: Gambling in the Civil War, 2 p.m.A fascinating look at gambling and games of chance practiced by Civil War soldiers in the field. Soldier life often produced long bouts of boredom allowing games of chance an opportunity to flourish. 3/16/2019 • Poverty Point World Heritage Site, Epps-Morning Hike, 10 a.m.A ranger-led hike showcasing the mounds, earthworks, and nature found in the park. Participants will meet in the museum at 10 a.m. for an introductory video. The hike can take up to two hours to complete, depending on the pace of the group. The visitors would also be able to enter the winter quarters exhibit to see how the soldiers lived. They can also try on some of the clothing and equipment the troops used. The four-day event kicks off on Thursday with an historic food tasting at 6 p.m. and speaker at 7 p.m. The Civil War School Day is set for 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday (contact site for registration).
